State number 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"1024\" width=\"473\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/acrossthemapwithmatt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/wp-16315646073844128945410240448276-473x1024.jpg?resize=473%2C1024&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1011\"\/><figcaption>Welcome to Vermont <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p> I was on roads most of the day with the exception of a 6 mile trail along a canal. I stopped and had an early lunch at a bench over looking the water. Tuna and cheese on Lithuanian bread. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"504\" width=\"672\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/acrossthemapwithmatt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/wp-16314968175948732732053309069831-1024x768.jpg?resize=672%2C504&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-998\"\/><figcaption>Brunch<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This canal had a different purpose then the other canals I have been along. Instead of being used to float barges, its purpose was to power water wheels for sawmills and grain mills and any thing else that could run off a water wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/acrossthemapwithmatt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/wp-16314968637926259165716197585699.jpg?w=672&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-999\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I was on route 5 a lot and surprisingly it was pretty flat. I only had 978 feet of elevation gain in 37 miles. It seemed like every creek I passed was fenced off and in a cow pasture. I could of stopped and filtered but I kept hoping for something better. And something better appeared! This spring was nice and cold and I filled both bottles without needing to purify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/acrossthemapwithmatt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/wp-16314971424652818959804458254817.jpg?w=672&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1002\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A few miles down the road there was a chicken bbq fundraiser that was closing down for the day. I stopped with the hopes of being given any leftovers but unfortunately for me they had sold out. I was given 2 bottles of water and a dr pepper. I sat with an older man on a cooler while we watched every one pack up thier awnings and fold up tables. He asked me all the typical questions so I told him my story.  From that point on he was my spokesperson. Every time someone asked me a question he answered for me. He had a terrific memory and remembered everything I had told him about my route and such. I sipped my Dr pepper in the shade and just smiled and nodded with having to talk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I have got farther north the leaves are changing a little bit not much. Every one says  in a couple more weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/acrossthemapwithmatt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/wp-16314967639395551799865420380559-scaled.jpg?w=672&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-997\"\/><figcaption>A little bit of fall colors<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m camped out side of Brattleboro tonight. Its beautiful camp spot along the water. It feels like rain is coming so I&#8217;m using a rain fly.
