I got into Vermont this afternoon. State number 6.

I was on roads most of the day with the exception of a 6 mile trail along a canal. I stopped and had an early lunch at a bench over looking the water. Tuna and cheese on Lithuanian bread.

This canal had a different purpose then the other canals I have been along. Instead of being used to float barges, its purpose was to power water wheels for sawmills and grain mills and any thing else that could run off a water wheel.

I was on route 5 a lot and surprisingly it was pretty flat. I only had 978 feet of elevation gain in 37 miles. It was farmland mostly.

It got hotter then I expected and I ran out of water. It seemed like every creek I passed was fenced off and in a cow pasture. I could of stopped and filtered but I kept hoping for something better. And something better appeared! This spring was nice and cold and I filled both bottles without needing to purify.

A few miles down the road there was a chicken bbq fundraiser that was closing down for the day. I stopped with the hopes of being given any leftovers but unfortunately for me they had sold out. I was given 2 bottles of water and a dr pepper. I sat with an older man on a cooler while we watched every one pack up thier awnings and fold up tables. He asked me all the typical questions so I told him my story. From that point on he was my spokesperson. Every time someone asked me a question he answered for me. He had a terrific memory and remembered everything I had told him about my route and such. I sipped my Dr pepper in the shade and just smiled and nodded with having to talk.
As I have got farther north the leaves are changing a little bit not much. Every one says in a couple more weeks.

I’m camped out side of Brattleboro tonight. Its beautiful camp spot along the water. It feels like rain is coming so I’m using a rain fly. I miss seeing the stars but if it rains ill be glad I used it.

Dinner was bread and package fettuccine Alfredo pasta.

I would like graze my moo moos in that alfalfa
They would sure like it.
Hi Matt, according to my calculations you have now ridden about the same distance as Pittsburgh to Mexican Hat, Utah!

Matt – if you’re riding up to Burlington, email me. You can camp in our yard. I stayed at your campsite on Lake Erie at Evangola State Park, as I was driving to see my parents in Ohio. Hope all is well.
Thanks for the offer! I truly appreciate it but I think i will be east of Burlington. Im heading for Woodville NH to get on the cross New Hampshire bike trail. I really appreciate the offer though
