I was without service for a few days. This post will cover those few days. Today is September, 25
I awoke at 5:00 to the pitter patter of light rain on my hammock. Even though yesterday was a short day I decided to go back to sleep. I only rode 19 miles yesterday. It was rainy and a bit windy. I found the perfect place to stay along the Kennebec River and decided to stop for the day even though it was only 11 am. My general rule for stealth camping is any time after 2 I start looking for a spot. At 2pm I’m very particular. It must have a creek or river close a log or rock to sit on while cooking and completely out of sight of the road. By 6pm any place that is safe and not underwater is great. Haha. Usually I’m in and set up by 4 or 5. Even though yesterday was easy I still slept nearly 12 hours! I didn’t wake back up till 8 this morning. The rain had quit but it was really cloudy. I don’t mind riding or camping in the rain. The problem is when its a road ride, all the water the vehicles splash on me. But that wasn’t a problem today because there were no vehicles. In Moscow Maine I got on a gravel road that went through some serious wilderness.

Before I got to Deadwater road though in the little town of Bingham, a man standing on the sidewalk asked if I wanted coffee. I replied I never turn down coffee on a rainy morning. He said come on in. Only then did I realize the house was actually a little pizza shop that didn’t open for several more hours. He unlocked the door while I leaned up my bike and took off my helmet and vest. I followed him inside and he started the coffee. I tried to make small talk but he wasn’t really interested. He brought me out coffee then a plate of sausage eggs toast and juice.

It was delicious. He did it all just to be kind. He never asked about my trip. To him it didn’t matter if I had crossed several states or just crossed the street. What mattered is that I was hungry and he fed me. Thank you Allen!

The riding was pretty tough. The road was rough and muddy. Between the mud, rocks and pot holes I only averaged 6 miles an hour. Actually I guess the beautiful scenery slowed me down too! Probably more then the mud.

There might of been a few stops at likely looking trout streams too.

At one place I stopped to take pictures I spotted two dollars on the edge of the road. I was a bit upset with myself for being so careless as to put money somewhere it could get lost. Im very carefull with money usually and couldn’t even think when I last had 2 dollars. When I walked over to get it I realized it had been there a while and I had not lost it. It was soaked from last night’s rain. I started poking around in the tall grass to see if there was more but then figured I had a better chance of finding an angry rattle snake then any more money.

I’m in prime moose habitat. If I was a moose I would live around here. Actually I want to live here even though I’m not a moose!

I am getting closer them. Today I saw moose tracks several different times. Real ones not the ice cream. Ice cream sounds really good though!

Today was sunny and beautiful im camped at a campground pretty close to Moosehead lake. There were more float planes docked then boats.

After setting up camp I couldn’t quite decide what to do for dinner. I had past a grocery store about a mile back. I was thinking of riding back to it and buy some meat and vegetables. The man at the next camp over from me struck up a conversation. He too is from Pennsylvania. Him and his wife have been on the road 3 weeks. We talked a while then he started offering me food. Of course I said yes! He gave me 2 frozen burgers, buns 2 homegrown red potatoes 1 sweet potato a hot dog a coke and a can of spam.

So I had a little feast tonight. An excellent meal. First course was hot dogs and fried potatoes

Second round was burgers

3rd course was sweet potato with beef crumbles.

And an almond joy for desert. It was a great meal! Later this evening the man brought over 2 eggs and several slices of bread for my breakfs
Very kind people you are meeting! I have to admit when you said “moose tracks” the first thing that came to mind was Ben & Jerry’s! Nice pictures.
