Belfast

Finally a rideable rail trail in Maine!

I’m on the Belfast rail trail. Its awesome! Unfortunately its only 2 miles long. I rode down to the docks on Belfast Bay. I love boats, especially sailboats and I was surprised how many there were at the docks. I wonder what they do for winter? I would think the bay freezes over but I don’t really know. I stayed until the sun set then headed back up the rail trail to stealth camp.

Today seemed really hard. There were lots of really long climbs. I really wasn’t prepared for that. I thought since I was going to sea level it would be mostly downhill. It was not!

I only rode 39 miles with 2350 of elevation gain. I’m pretty tired out. But it wasn’t all hills today. One area the road went between two lakes.

Also there was a lot of farmland today and I’m pretty sure these Belted Galloway cows are the first cows I have seen in Maine.

Yesterday in the town of Dexter I resupplied at a Hannaford Market. I got my usual pasta sides and some tuna. It was a bit expensive $1.69 for the pasta sides. I hate spending over a dollar for them. I got 3 days worth of food for 13 dollars. Right after leaving a man was opening up a historical house and museum. I stopped and bought a few post cards after looking around. Dexter Maine is where Dexter shoes were made. The factory employed 1200 people. It went out of business in 2001. The little museum was pretty much dedicated to that but I found it interesting.

The guy working there asked all about my trip. We talked quite a while. He offered to let me camp on the porch of the museum and said I could have the keys to let myself in to use the bathroom. It was a tempting offer but still to early in the day to camp. It wasn’t even noon yet.

I have loved Maine. The views are absolutely stunning . Im ready to be heading south now though. I am no longer going to continue north to West Quoddy Head.

Tomorrow I will be East Coast Greenway. Im looking forward to that. And I hope to get a lobster for dinner! Maybe Ill have a lobster and a Moxie soda. Ha ha just joking about the Moxie soda!
