Rose dropped me off on the St Marks Rail trail around 7:30 am. It was cold. 34 degrees. Within a half mile I stopped to put on more clothes. The sun was out and I looked forward to the spots that were not shaded for a change. It was a very well maintained, beautiful trail.

About 15 miles into the ride I heard a metallic ping and looking at my rear wheel, it had a pretty bad wobble. I assumed I broke a spoke. But I had broke the hub flange again. This is my second hub. The first one broke at 3200 miles. This one broke at 2400 miles. I removed my brake pads so I could continue to ride and got as far as Sopchopy. I have now ridden a total of 5,663 miles.

Camping is allowed in the town park here. After setting up camp, I called Rose. She agreed to bring me the rear rim from one of her bikes after she was done working then camp with me for the night.

She arrived around 6:30. Food was the first thing on our list. We were both hungry. Hamoknockers BBQ was only a few miles away so we went there. Afterwards I put my new tire on the rim and surprisingly everything lined up perfectly. I thought I would at least have to adjust the index shifting. But even that was working properly.

Rose left early this morning to go to work. I am waiting in the sunshine for it to warm up to at least 40 degrees before I head out. It’s a beautiful sunny day so I know it will get warm. While waiting I thought I would give this brief update.

Wild! In all my years of riding, I’ve never broken a hub. I hope I didn’t just jinx myself!
Lol. They are aluminum. I’m not so much a fan of them any more. I’m going back to my tried and true shimano Deores.
I’m excited you are back on the road. I’m ready to read some live touring!
I used to have trouble with breaking spokes until I went to a tandem wheel set. It has been bullet proof! 42 spokes front, 48 rear. Just a thought.
Did Rose tease you that you sure go to extremes to see her? 😉
Lol. Yes so did my mother. I have been using triple butted spokes. I have never broke any. I think that heavy of spoke is stronger then the hub. Maybe? It’s all part of the adventure and I did get to see Rose another time so it really worked in my favor!
That’s too bad you’re having issues with bike but nice you spent more time with Rose. Over 5,000 miles! Impressive
Matthew thats a huge amount of miles journey on!!!!
I’m with your mother on this. You’d do anything to see Rose!
Was so nice to meet you this morning at Caribbean Coffee Shop. Hope the pictures came out good.Happy trails.
It was nice meeting you and the latte was delicious! Thanks for taking the pictures. They were great
Hey man, stop generating so much power, you’re busting everything! And O how I grin, Matt, and it is fascinating that components fail like that, who knew. And I echo the comment about running a tandem wheel, something heavy duty as strength is more important than weight. Or just ride whatever until the point of fail and replace it. And with the migration to larger wheels, there are countless 26″ wheels available at good prices. And I like shades–and that you’re shading us up here in the cold and snow. 🙂
