A Latte in Brunswick

I was on my second cup of coffee when Rose woke up around 6 am. As we exchanged cheerful good mornings there was a thump as one of her hammock knots slipped and dropped her flat on the ground. It was only about 2 feet and the ground was soft, almost muddy so I didn’t think she would of hurt herself. Rose and I are very much alike in so many ways, and the places we differ end up complimenting the relationship. One thing we don’t have in common is expressing ourselves. I’m very reserved, maybe even stoic. Rose is a bit more vocal about what she is thinking or feeling and often expresses herself with flamboyant exuberance. I asked if she was OK and while waiting for a reply I wondered what her reaction would be. She never answered and instead just started laughing. It was contagious and soon we were both laughing hysterically.

Hammock fail.

After helping her up off the ground, we made oatmeal for breakfast and headed out.

Before getting to Brunswick we stopped for a lunch break. We had cooked extra last night so we could have a big lunch before hitting the town. Cold whole wheat angle hair in clam sauce was just as good the second time around. We ate out of the ziploc bag so we didn’t even have to wash dishes .

I had a large iced vanilla latte today! It was so good. It has been 9 whole days since I had one. And thanks to the coffee fund, it did not come out of our budget!! We went into Brunswick again for water and ice. This time my resolve crumbled and I just had to stop at Beans In The Belfry. It’s an old church that has been turned into a neat coffee shop. Some of the seating is still the church pews. We chose a couch next to a book shelf and made ourselves at home for an hour long break. The couch was very big, but as bad as we smelled no one sat with us. It was very relaxing and it felt great to be out of the heat for a bit. Rose fell asleep against my shoulder which made it terribly difficult to steal sips of her latte without her waking up and catching me red handed.

Caffienated and energetic we rolled out of town around 2. The ten miles to our campsite flew by. We set up camp, took a swim and started cooking dinner.

Our pantry pannier was almost empty so for dinner we what was left. Surprisingly it all went together really well and was delicious. Cheese grits, instant mashed potatoes, white gravy with dried beef. Three packs of instant oat meal will be our breakfast.

My mom is picking us up today and we will spend a night or two at their house. We have been 9 days without a shower. Thats the longest Rose has ever been without one. With a bit of pride, I told her how I had went 78 days without a shower on my canoe trip from New York to New Orleans. She didn’t seem nearly as impressed as I thought she should of been.
